Oct. 4, 2007
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Thursday, October 04, 2007) Former Southeast Missouri State baseball player Asif Shah has signed a professional baseball contract with the Southern Illinois Miners, it was announced today. Shah will join the Miners for the 2008 baseball season.
Shah earned First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors at the utility position as a senior last season. The southpaw led the pitching staff with seven wins as he posted a 7-3 record on the mound with a 3.22 ERA. He also led the OVC with three shutouts, and he was one of only eight pitchers in the nation with three or more. Meanwhile, Shah also led the club with 50 runs batted in, and he hit .312 with 10 doubles and five home runs. In addition to earning all-conference honors, Shah also became the first baseball player in OVC history to earn both Player and Pitcher of the Week honors in the same season.
Upon joining the Miners in the spring, Shah will work out on the mound as well as in the field and at the plate.
"I'm excited for this opportunity to play at the next level," Shah said. "I want to do whatever I can to help the team win."
The Miners recently completed their inaugural season in Marion, Ill., as members of the independent Frontier League. The club finished the season with a 49-47 record, which was good for second place in the West Division.
