MUNCIE, Ind. -
Senior Danielle Meyer tallied a double-double of a match-best 17 kills and 13 digs as No. 16 Ohio State (1-0) posted a 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-19) victory over Southeast Missouri State (0-1) in the 2007 season opener for both teams at the Active Ankle Invitational, held at Ball State's Worthen Arena.
Sophomore setter Sarah Barth (Germantown, Ill./Central) paced Southeast with 14 assists, seven kills and seven digs. Senior outside hitter Brittany Hastings (Wichita, Kan./Circle) and senior middle blocker Brenna Schlader (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) each added seven kills with Schlader also contributing three service aces and three block assists. Sophomore libero Molly Davis (Muncie, Ind./Burris) tallied seven digs and senior defensive specialist Sirma Ozenir (Izmir, Turkey/Izmir Karsiyaka) notched six digs for the Redhawks.
"I'm very pleased with the way we came out and fought in games one and two. I thought we executed what we had been working on in practice," Southeast head coach Renata Nowacki said. "I think we had a lot of mental errors in the third game and Ohio State did a really good job of figuring us out. I thought our passing was exceptionally well and I anticipate that we're going to build on this for our matches tomorrow."
Ohio State used an 8-2 scoring run in the first game behind five kills from freshman Katie Dull that snapped a 4-4 tie to claim a 12-6 lead. The Redhawks rebounded with a 12-6 run of their own to knot the score at 18-18 which culminated with three straight kills from Hastings. After junior outside hitter Aubrey Dondlinger (Palos Heights, Ill./Parkland CC) tied the score at 21-all with a kill, the Buckeyes outscored Southeast by a 9-3 margin, including three consecutive service points from senior Briana McCarthy, to close the game.
Freshman Carly Syms and McCarthy helped OSU go up by a commanding 15-5 margin in the second game. Syms tallied six straight service points early in the stanza and McCarthy notched four kills. Southeast responded with a 6-3 run to close within 18-11 in which Schlader and Ozenir recorded service aces, but a ball handling error and an ace from freshman Kaila Calhoun later hiked the Buckeyes' advantage back to double digits at 21-11. The Redhawks sliced their deficit to 24-18 on another service ace from Schlader that capped a 7-3 comeback run before Ohio State tallied six of the final 10 points score to head into intermission ahead by a two-game margin.
In the third stanza, the Buckeyes outscored Southeast, 16-7, that broke a 7-7 standoff to take a 23-14 lead. The Redhawks closed to within 24-17 on a kill from Schlader, but could get no closer as OSU posted a final 6-2 scoring drive for the match.
In addition to Meyer, Briana McCarthy and Katie Dull also produced double-digit kill efforts for the Buckeyes with 25 kills and 12 kills, respectively. Betsy Hone contributed a match-high 51 assists and eight digs and Ami Stevens added 10 digs.
The Redhawks are back in action tomorrow morning against Ball State with a start time of 11:30 a.m.
