Saint Louis Defeats Redhawks, 3-1, At Santo Bento Invite

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Sophomore Bridget Fonke recorded a match-high 21 kills and five service aces to help host Saint Louis capture a 3-1 (30-25, 25-30, 18-30, 28-30) win over Southeast Missouri State to close the first day of the Santo Bento Volleyball Invitational tonight at SLU's Baughman-Eberhardt Center. The Billikens improved to 6-2 on the year while the Redhawks drop their season record to 3-4.

Junior outside hitter Aubrey Dondlinger (Palos Heights, Ill./Parkland CC) paced Southeast with a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs, and senior outside hitter Brittany Hastings (Wichita, Kan./Circle) added 11 kills and two service aces. Sophomore setter Sarah Barth (Germantown, Ill./Central) recorded 37 assists and eight digs, while senior middle blocker Brenna Schlader (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) contributed seven blocks (two solo, five assisted) and sophomore libero Molly Davis (Muncie, Ind./Burris) added 11 digs.

Southeast posted a 4-0 advantage early in the first game behind three kills from Hastings before the Billikens scored three straight points, including a pair of service aces from freshman Emily Galbraith, to cut the visitor's lead at 4-3. SLU came back by scoring 15 of the next 28 points to claim an 18-17 lead. Southeast then produced a 12-7 scoring drive to capture a 29-25 lead before a block from Barth and junior middle blocker Kim Unnerstall (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) closed the game.

The Billikens broke a 5-5 tie in the second game with four straight points to claim a 9-5 lead, but a Dondlinger kill and a SLU hitting error brought Southeast to within 9-7. Fonke contributed three kills and a solo block as part of a 14-7 run as Saint Louis claimed its biggest lead of the stanza at 23-14. The Redhawks later closed to within 28-25 after Hastings recorded three straight service points, but SLU scored the final two points to even the match at 1-1 heading into intermission.

Saint Louis snapped an 11-11 tie in game three with a 13-5 run to claim a 24-16 advantage on a solo block from junior Lauren Christman. Dondlinger sliced Southeast's deficit to 24-17 with a kill before the home team used a game-closing 6-1 drive to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Kills from Schlader and Dondlinger gave the Redhawks an 8-6 lead to start the fourth game and the lead later increased to 20-14 on a kill from Barth. The Billikens came back with a 15-4 scoring drive to gain a 29-24 lead before Southeast scored four straight points to close within 29-28 before sophomore Sally Warning closed the match with a kill.

Christman (14 kills, six blocks) and Warning (11 kills) also recorded double-digit kills for Saint Louis. Sophomore Whitney Roth posted a match-high 48 assists and nine digs, while sophomore Whitney Behrens recorded 16 digs for the Billikens.

The Redhawks are back in action at SLU tomorrow afternoon with a pair of matches against Connecticut at 1:30 p.m., and IUPUI at 4:30 p.m.
