Gamecocks Stun Redhawks

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008) - The women's volleyball team dropped today's match against Jacksonville State in straight sets, 3-0 (24-26, 25-27, 26-28).
The Gamecocks jumped out quickly to a 1-5 lead in the first set as Brooke Schumacher completed the run with her first kill of the set. The Gamecocks would extend their lead after an Emily Hughes attack error gave them a 4-10 lead. The margin would remain at six after Stephanie Koontz recorded a kill to give the Gamecocks the 8-14 lead. The Redhawks put together an 8-2 run to get back into the set and tie it up at 16-16 after Hughes recorded a kill. Amanda Rickhoff would give the Redhawks their first lead of the set at 18-17 after she recorded her first kill of the set. The Redhawks looked ready to complete their comeback and take the set after Rickhoff recorded another kill to give the Redhawks the 22-20 lead, but the Gamecocks would take the next three points and regain the lead at 22-23. The Gamecocks would take three of the next five points to give them the 24-26 set victory.
Hughes led all players in the set with six kills. Sarah Barth posted a set-high 11 assists and nine digs, to go along with three kills in the set. Aubrey Dondlinger recorded three kills and five digs for the Redhawks. Molly Davis pitched in with five digs.
Caitlin Vorbeck tallied a team-high five kills in the set and also chipped in with two digs. Schumacher led the Gamecocks with seven assists and pitched in with three kills and two digs. Brittney Whitten and Koontz tallied four kills each in the set. The Gamecocks posted a .300 attack percentage for the set.
The Redhawks looked ready to even the match up at 1-1 after jumping out to an 8-5 lead, capped off by a Claire Keaton kill, in the second set. The Gamecocks would then go on a 5-1 run, capped off by a Whitten kill, to give the Gamecocks their first lead of the set at 9-10. The Redhawks fought back though and went on a 5-2 run to recapture the lead at 14-12. The two teams would battle to a 19-19 tie before Koontz recorded a kill to give the Gamecocks a 19-20 lead. The Redhawks would fight back once again to regain the lead at 22-21 after Dondlinger recorded her fourth kill of the set. The Gamecocks would once again break the Redhawks hearts and take the set after a kill by Kara Slater gave them a 25-27 set victory.
Keaton and Dondlinger led the Redhawks with four kills a piece in the set. Dondlinger pitched in with five digs and one solo block to go along with her four kills. Barth posted a set-high 14 assists and chipped in with three digs. Davis led all players with seven digs in the set.
Whitten led the Gamecocks with five kills and pitched in with six digs. Vorbeck tallied four kills, one dig and one solo block. Lauren Harkins led the Gamecocks with seven digs. Allie Schleisman led the Gamecocks with eight assists.
The third set started out much like the first as the Gamecocks jumped out to an early 4-7 lead after an attack error by Hughes. The Redhawks would battle back though and tie the set at 10-10 after an attack error by Paige Beasley. The Redhawks took their first lead, since leading 3-2 early on, at 14-13 after a Vorbeck attack error. The Redhawks held on to their lead as they looked ready to take the set as they led 22-19 after another Vorbeck attack error. The Gamecocks battled back though and took a 24-25 lead after a kill by Whitten. Beasley recorded her first kill of the set to close out the set at 26-28 and give the Gamecocks the match victory.
Kim Unnerstall, Keaton and Dondlinger led the Redhawks with four kills a piece in the set. Barth posted a set-high 12 assists for the Redhawks. Kelly Benacka led the Redhawks with eight digs in the final set.
Whitten led all players with eight kills and six digs in the set. Vorbeck chipped in with six kills and three digs. Schumacher led the Gamecocks with nine assists.
Dondlinger led the Redhawks with 11 kills and chipped in with 13 digs to give her five double-doubles for the season. Unnerstall posted 10 kills and two total blocks for the Redhawks. Keaton tallied eight kills and eight digs for the match. Barth posted her sixth double-double of the season as she recorded a match-high 37 assists and a team-high 15 digs to go along with seven kills. Hughes posted eight kills, while Davis recorded 14 digs.
Whitten led all players with 17 kills and 17 digs for the match. Vorbeck pitched in with 15 kills and six digs. Schleisman tallied a team-high 22 assists kills, while Schumacher posted 21 assists of her own.
