Women's Basketball Wins Road Finale at UT Martin, 53-43

Southeast Missouri State women's basketball concluded the road portion of its 2007-08 schedule Saturday afternoon with a 53-43 win at UT Martin at the Elam Center. The Redhawks improved to 19-6 (14-2) with the win, while the Skyhawks fell to 5-22 (2-15). Southeast posted a 10-0 mark in Ohio Valley Conference road contests for the first time in school history and it finished with an 11-1 record away from home this season.
The Skyhawks claimed a 6-2 lead in the opening four minutes of the first half with junior Phyllisha Mitchell scoring all of the points. A three-pointer by junior guard Tarina Nixon (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland) and a jumper from junior forward Rachel Blunt (Dexter, Mo./Dexter) handed Southeast a 7-6 lead at the 14:44 mark. Back-to-back layups by senior Crystal Fuller in 42 seconds propelled UT Martin to a 10-7 leading margin with 14:02 remaining, but the visitors posted a 19-8 scoring run in a 10-plus minute stretch behind eight points from junior forward Crysta Glenn (San Diego, Calif./Cowley County CC) in claiming a 26-18 advantage at the 1:53 time limit. Blunt drained another three at the 24-second mark gave the Redhawks their first double-digit lead of the contest at 29-18 before Mitchell connected on a layup at the buzzer to slice UTM's deficit to 29-20 entering halftime.
In the second half, UT Martin notched a 17-8 run in the first seven and a half minutes to knot the score at 37-apiece with Mitchell posting seven points and senior Jennifer Angler adding six points. Fuller gave the Skyhawks a 39-37 lead with a layup at the 12:02 mark, but Nixon connected on a pair of free throws at the 10:07 mark to tie the game at 39-39. Junior guard Sonya Daugherty
(St. Louis, Mo./Hancock) used a steal and a layup at 7:33 to jumpstart a 12-0 run over six minutes as Southeast posted its biggest lead of the game with 1:39 remaining at 51-39. The Skyhawks could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
The Redhawks were led by senior guard Ashley Lovelady (Elkhart, Ind./Moberly Area CC) with 10 points, all in the second half, and five rebounds. Daugherty finished with eight points, five caroms and three steals. Glenn added eight points and a season-best four steals, while Nixon added seven points and a game-best five assists. Blunt notched seven points and three boards. Senior center Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) posted six points and five boards for the Redhawks.
Mitchell tallied a game-high 18 points and seven boards to lead UT Martin. Fuller contributed 10 points with seven caroms and Angler notched six points to go along with five boards and three assists.
Southeast opens a four-game homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 20 with an OVC matchup against Austin Peay with a start time of 7:30 p.m.
