Women's Basketball Suffers 73-50 Home Loss to Samford

Freshman Emily London tallied a game-high 18 points in leading visiting Samford to a 73-50 win over Southeast Missouri State Thursday night in an Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball contest at the Show Me Center. The Bulldogs improve to 22-7 (15-4) while the Redhawks dropped to 21-7 (16-3) with the loss.
The visitors opened the first five minutes of the game with a 15-7 lead with seven points coming from junior Chika Okoli and later increased its leading margin to 18-7 on a three-pointer by London at the 14:35 mark. Southeast clawed back with a 10-4 scoring run over an eight-plus minute stretch behind six points from senior center Missy Whitney (Charleston, Mo./Three Rivers CC) to slice its deficit to 22-17 with 6:23 left in the stanza. A three-point play by redshirt sophomore Monica Maxwell sandwiched in-between layups from Okoli and redshirt senior Alex Munday hiked Samford's advantage started a 13-8 scoring drive over the final 4:38 to claim a 35-25 halftime advantage.
A 29-18 run by the Bulldogs over a stretch of 12-plus minutes in the second half helped increase their leading margin to 64-43 with 7:43 remaining in the game. The Redhawks would get no closer than 20 points for the rest of the game.
Whitney led Southeast with 13 points, while senior guard Ashley Lovelady (Elkhart, Ind./Moberly Area CC) and freshman guard Lauren Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) added seven points. Junior forward Crysta Glenn (San Diego, Calif./Cowley County CC) paced the Redhawks with six rebounds.
Maxwell scored 17 points, while Okoli tallied a double-double of 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Samford.
The Redhawks are back in action on Saturday, March 1 against Jacksonville State in their season finale with a start time of 5 p.m. Lovelady and Whitney will be honored in a Senior Night ceremony after the game.
