Volleyball Blanks Struggling Cougars, 3-0

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Tuesday, October 13, 2009) – The Redhawks volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak on Tuesday evening as they easily dispatched SIU Edwardsville, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-19). The win was the Redhawks first at Houck Field House during their recent five match homestand.

The match didn’t start off so well for the Redhawks (7-12) who fell behind 6-1 to start off the opening set. A 10-1 Redhawks run quickly erased that deficit as they pulled ahead, 16-12. That lead would get as high as six points 24-18 thanks to a 4-0 run which secured the opening set victory.

The Redhawks had a .238 attack percentage in the first set while the Cougars (1-18) recorded a .171 attack percentage.

The second set was the closest set of the match as it featured six ties and three lead changes. The Redhawks grabbed an early advantage 6-3 but the Cougars used a 7-3 run to their first lead of the set. The Redhawks would eventually tie the set and then used a 9-3 run to grab their largest lead of the set, 19-14.

After grabbing their second five-point lead, 23-18 the Cougars staged one last comeback as they used a 5-1 run to make it a one point set 24-23. Paige Dossey (Avon/Avon, Ind.) put an end to the Cougars run with a kill to end the set and give the Redhawks a 2-0 advantage.

The third and final set was all Redhawks from the onset as they jumped ahead 8-0 highlighted by three Karleigh DeLong (Santiago/Corona, Calif.) kills. That lead would swell to ten points, 14-4 on a Emily Hughes (St. Benedict/Memphis, Tenn.) kill.

The Cougars managed to cut the lead to three points 18-15 but the Redhawks would close out the set thanks to Hughes three kills including the match winner.

The Redhawks finished the match with a season’s best attack percentage of .244 including a .344 percentage in the final set. The Cougars were held to a .176 attack percentage.

Hughes finished with a match-high 16 kills as she committed just one attack error for a season-high .536 attack percentage. Hughes also led all players with three block assists.

DeLong had another strong match as she finished with 14 kills and a .333 attack percentage.

Kelly Benacka (Jacobs/Algonquin, Ill.) recorded her team-best ninth double-double of the season with a match-high 37 assists and 11 digs. All nine of her double-doubles have come in the last ten matches.

Molly Davis (Burris/Muncie, Ind.) led all players with 17 digs. Claire Keaton (Incarnate Word Academy/St. Louis, Mo.) chipped in 13 digs and Dossey recorded a career-high ten digs. Dossey also led all players with two service aces.

The Cougars were led by Karie Downing offensively who finished with ten kills. Sammi Minton recorded a double-double with team bests of 19 assists and 15 digs.

The Redhawks resume their homestand and Ohio Valley Conference play this Friday, October 16 as they welcome Eastern Illinois to Houck at 7:00 p.m.
