Women's Basketball Adds La Kea Jones to Coaching Staff

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Wednesday, November 18, 2009) – Redhawks women’s basketball coach John Ishee announced the hiring of La Kea Jones as an assistant coach. The hiring completes his coaching staff that also includes second-year assistants Jayme Callahan and Elizabeth Cansdale for the 2009-2010 season.
“I would like to express my gratitude to Coach Ishee and Southeast Missouri for allowing me this wonderful opportunity to continue my coaching career at such a high level,” said Jones. “I look forward to working with Coach Ishee and the rest of the coaching staff this season and helping the program return to being the top team in the Ohio Valley Conference.”
Jones comes to Cape Girardeau after serving as an assistant coach at NCAA Division III Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont and prior to that she was at Mount St. Mary’s during the 2008-09 season.
While at Mount St. Mary’s she helped coach the team to a 14-16 record, a six-game improvement from the previous year and the best record for the program since the 2000-01 season.
Her duties included assisting in the development of both guards and post position players, scouting, film exchanges, editing game film, recruiting as well organizing travel and team meal arrangements.
Jones was a four-year starting point guard at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2004-08 where she ranks in the program’s top-ten in five career categories including first in games played with 121 including 109 starts and minutes played. She ranks third all-time in assists with 424 including 159 assists during her senior year which ranks fifth on the school’s single season charts. She also ranks eighth in career steals with 177 and tenth in career three-pointers made.
During her senior season she played in a school record 1,129 minutes setting a new career best after playing 1,023 minutes during her sophomore season which ranks ninth on the school’s single season charts.
For her career she averaged 6.2 points 3.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 3.5 assists per game. She averaged a career-high 8.5 ppg her sophomore season. Her senior year she averaged 4.2 ppg and averaged 4.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Her 159 assists during her senior campaign led the Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA). She recorded 31 double-digit scoring games in her career.
The Fort Washington, Md., native, posted a 67-54 record with the Rams. Jones helped the Rams to its second postseason berth and best record in program history in her senior campaign. Virginia Commonwealth finished the 2007-08 season with a 26-8 mark, made an appearance in the school’s first-ever CAA Championship Game and advanced to the second round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament, falling to Michigan 75-67.
Jones graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal Justice from Virginia Commonwealth in 2008.
“We are very fortunate to get a person of high professional and personal character of La Kea.” said Coach Ishee. “She played collegiately at a high level as a point guard and our young players will learn a lot from her. We as a program are excited to add her to our staff.”
