Northern Iowa Takes Series Finale, 11-5

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Northern Iowa used strong pitching and three big offensive innings to defeat Southeast in the series finale Sunday. The Panthers (6-6) scored 11 runs on 13 hits and held down the Redhawks (7-5) powerful lineup. Jason Summers led the way for UNI with two doubles and five runs driven in.

UNI pulled ahead with a 3-run first inning and never surrendered the lead. The Panthers scored four times in the sixth inning and added three runs in the eighth frame.

Southeast cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Kenton Parmley singled to left field, scoring Trenton Moses, who led off the inning with a double to left-center.

The Redhawks were held to the single run before scoring four times in the bottom of the ninth. Tony Spencer, Jim Klocke and Tyrell Cummings hit run scoring singles during their final at-bats.

Carlos Pinedo (1-1) was credited with the victory for UNI. He tossed four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. He struck out four SEMO hitters and also issued four walks.

Josh Syberg (2-1) took the loss for Southeast after giving up two hits and three earned runs in one-third of an inning. Ryan Poole added five innings of middle relief.

Spencer finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Cummings and Parmley both finished with two hits.

Colin Rea threw four and two-third relief innings for the Panthers before giving way to Keith Worner, who retired the final hitter of the game.

Southeast returns to action Friday with another 4-game weekend series at Capaha Field. They will face Northern Illinois from the Mid-American Conference. First pitch in the series opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. The teams will play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. with the final game Sunday slated for 1 p.m.
