Success in Scholarship, Sports and Service Luncheon
April 8, 2009
Cape Girardeau, Mo. -
A luncheon at Dempster Hall on Wednesday honored those involved with the
Success in Scholarship, Sports and Service initiative of the Southeast Missouri State Department of Athletics.
Cindy Gannon, associate director of athletics, organized the luncheon to honor those associated with the program, the administration that embraced the idea, athletes who nominated mentors from the faculty and staff, and coaches of those athletes.
Dr.Ed Leoni, chairman of the Southeast athletic committee, began the initiative several years ago with the goal of fully integrating the campus stressing academic, athletic and service missions. Dr. Leoni spoke at the luncheon.
Football player Kendall Magana, president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, told the group he liked the idea that at Southeast, athletes are students first and athletes second. He said his football playing days had provided many benefits, but that his greatest accomplishment would be receiving his college diploma.
