Redhawks Lead OVC Men's and Women's Track After First Day

Strong performances in the field events propelled the Southeast Missouri State men's and women's track teams to first place in the team competition after day one of the Ohio Valley Conference track and field championships at Eastern Kentucky.
The Redhawks won five individual events on day one with the women getting individual titles from Juli Koenegstein in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Samantha Espiricueta in the javelin and Ashley Brewer in the shot put as the Redhawks tallied 67.5 points to lead second place Eastern Illinois with 49.
The Southeast men got individual titles from Josh Uchtman in the shot put and Richard Martin in the javelin. The men tallied 58 points to hold an 11 point advantage over second place Eastern Illinois. The men got 24 of the points in the shot put with Uchtman followed by Andy Glass and Richard Martin for a Redhawks 1-2-3 finish.
The men got a second place finish from Brandon Karcher in the 10,000-meters while Tyler Terry was fourth in the long jump and Josh Sutton third in the high jump.
The Redhawks women got big points in the javelin with Espiricueta winning and Martin finishing second. Briana Egbuka was fourth in the shot put while Shemeika Brewer was fourth in the long jump with Rachel Kahle seventh. Cara Harbstreet was third in the high jump and Amy Warren fourth in the 10K.
Kahle also qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100 and 200-meter dashes and will run on both relays. Koenegstein will come back Saturday in the 1,500 and 5,000-meters.
