Volleyball Drops Home Opener to Lady Govs, 3-0

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Friday, September 25, 2009) – The Redhawks volleyball team couldn’t get into a rhythm in their home opener against Austin Peay, losing 3-0 (16-25, 23-25, 23-25) on Friday evening at Houck Field House. The loss was the Redhawks fourth-straight against the Lady Govs and drops them to 5-8 on the year and 2-2 in OVC play.
The Redhawks came out cold to start the match as they managed just a .086 attack percentage in the opening frame while allowing the Lady Govs (8-4, 2-1 OVC) a .243 attack percentage.
The Redhawks at one point held an 8-7 lead but the Lady Govs went on the first of their many runs to grab the lead. A late 7-1 run put the Redhawks away for good and they coasted to the nine-point win.
In the second frame the Redhawks started off strong as they jumped ahead 10-7. The Lady Govs tied the game at 13-all on a Taylor Skinner kill. A Lady Govs attack error gave the Redhawks the lead back 14-13 but a 3-0 run by the Lady Govs them a lead they would not relinquish.
The Redhawks managed to keep it close and tied the set at 23-all but the Lady Govs recorded the last two points for the 2-0 match advantage.
The Redhawks came out of the locker room for the third set sluggish as they quickly fell behind 5-1. A 10-5 run by the Redhawks gave them their first lead of the match, 11-10 and jumped ahead 14-12.
The Lady Govs didn’t let the set get away and kept it close. With the Redhawks leading 19-17, the Lady Govs called a timeout and then reeled off a 5-0 run to lead 22-19. A Karleigh DeLong (Santiago/Corona, Calif.) kill made saved match-point and made it a one-point set, 24-23. However Ilyanna ended the set and the match with a kill to extend the team’s winning streak to three matches.
The Lady Govs finished with a .221 attack percentage for the match thanks in part to a .261 mark in the deciding set. The Redhawks managed just a .122 attack percentage.
DeLong led the Redhawks offense with her team-best fourth double-double of the season. She led the team with 13 kills on a match-best 48 swings. She added 15 digs defensively.
Paige Dossey (Avon/Avon, Ind.) recorded seven kills and tied her career best with three block assists.
Emily Hughes (St. Benedict/Memphis, Tenn.) led the team with a .211 attack percentage while finishing with six kills.
Kelly Benacka (Jacobs/Algonquin, Ill.) tied DeLong for the team lead with her fourth double-double. It was her fourth-straight since moving to the setter position. She finished with a team-best 28 assists and recorded 11 digs.
Senior Molly Davis (Burris/Muncie, Ind.) finished with a match-best 22 digs. She extended her double-digit dig match streak to 33-straight matches. It was also her seventh-straight match in which she has finished with 20+ digs.
The Lady Govs were led by First Team All-OVC selection Stephanie Champine who poured in a match-best 16 kills and added 15 digs for the double-double. Jessica Mollman finished with 11 kills and recorded a .409 attack percentage. Setter Sarah Alisaleh also recorded a double-double with a match-high 42 assists and 14 digs. Paige Economos led the team with 17 digs.
The Redhawks conclude their two-match homestand tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. when they host OVC opponent Tennessee State at Houck Field House.
