Gymnastics Will Compete Against Conference Foe Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. (Friday, January 15, 2010) – The Redhawks gymnastics team (1-0, 1-0 MIC) will travel to Normal, Ill. this Friday evening to face Midwest Independent Conference rival Illinois State University at 7:00 p.m.
Last week, the Redhawks opened their 2010 season with a conference win against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, 190.275-186.300.
Southeast swept the top-three honors on all four events as well as the top-two honors in the all-around competition.
Individually, Southeast saw Rikara Turner (Hastings, Minn./Twin City Twisters) tie for the win on beam and the all-around title. She also placed third on vault, bars, and floor. Newcomer, Jordan Salsberg (Gulf Port, Miss./Laniers) won the individual crown on the vault and bars. She placed second on the floor and in the all-around. Brianna Gaddie (East Grand Forks, Minn./Red River Valley) tied for the individual title on beam and won the crown on the floor.
The Illinois State Redbirds (0-1, 0-0 MIC) are coming off a home loss against Central Michigan. The Redbirds were edged out by the Chippewas, 191.475-191.650.
Last season, the Redbirds finished runner-up to the Redhawks at the MIC Championship competition.
Three Redbirds to watch are juniors Erica Schick and Hannah Deutsch, and freshman Tori Sarantakis. Schick advanced to the NCAA Regionals last season. Deutsch competed in the World Maccabiah Games in Israel last summer. She earned a silver medal on beam and bronze on the floor in the competition.
