CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Matt Scheible and J.J. Sanchez were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District First-Team. For making the First-Team, Scheible and Sanchez will appear on the national ballot for consideration for Academic All-American later this month.
To be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic standing and have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. District VII selections include schools from the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
Scheible, who has a 3.65 GPA in Accounting, was the preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference selection at quarterback and has lived up to that billing in leading Southeast to an overall record of 8-1, 7-0 mark in the OVC and a No. 9 national ranking (which is a school all-time best).
Scheible has completed 63.6 percent of his passes (84-of-132) for 984 yards and six touchdowns and thrown only one interception. The junior has also rushed for 734 yards and four touchdowns in nine games. His 81.6 rushing yards/game is ranked fourth in the OVC while his 139.7 passing efficiency rating is third-best in the league. Scheible has led the Redhawks to a school-record eight-straight wins.
Sanchez, who boasts a 3.82 GPA in Criminal Justice, has 38 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, two sacks, three quarterback hurries, one pass breakup and a pass deflection in nine starts this season. Sanchez is part of a defensive unit that ranks first in the OVC in scoring defense (19.8 points/game) and second in total defense (294.6 yards/game).
Eastern Kentucky DL Emory Attig also represented the OVC on the Academic All-District Team.
The ESPN Academic All-America football team will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 23.
