Track & Field Team Completes Day One of Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa (Friday, April 23, 2010) – The Southeast Missouri State track and field teams were impressive in their first day of competition at the Drake Relays. The team recorded three top-ten finishes on Friday and finished with seven top-20 finishes at the highly competitive meet.

Senior Juli Koenegstein got the team started with a ninth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Running against 20 of the nation’s top collegians, she crossed the finish line in 10:48.93.

Two members of the men’s team shined as well against the highly competitive field. Senior Brandon Colbert collected a ninth place finish out of 24 throwers in the shot put. In his first throw, he sent the shot 53’-7.75”. However, he fouled on his final two attempts and failed to reach the finals.

In the pits, junior Tyler Terry managed a distance of 23’-1.75” in the long jump to place ninth out of 24 competitors.

Samantha Espiricueta placed 13th out of 31 throwers in the javelin. She fouled in her first attempt before unleashing a throw of 129’-0.00”, securing the top-15 finish.

Senior Ashley Brewer competed in two events on Friday and finished 19th in both. In the shot, she unleashed a throw of 45’-3.75” in her opening attempt but fouled on her final two. In the discus, she secured her placing with a distance of 149’-0.00”.

The 4X400 meter relay team consisting of Tiffany Mead, Rachel Kahle, Kelley Good and Jerika Lewis failed to make the finals after finishing fourth in the heat and 19th overall with a time of 3:50.20.

Colbert will be the only Redhawk competing on Sunday as he will throw the discus and the hammer. Results will be posted on www.godrakebulldogs.com

The majority of the team will compete tomorrow as well. They will participate in the SIUE Twilight Relays on the campus of SIU Edwardsville.
