CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri will officially begin its preparation for the 2011 campaign when it opens spring drills Saturday. The Redhawks will practice from Noon-2 p.m., CT, at Houck Stadium.

Southeast, which went 9-3 overall and 7-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play en route to its first-ever conference title and NCAA Playoff appearance in 2010, enters the spring with 75 players.

The Redhawks have 17 seniors, led by quarterback Matt Scheible. Scheible became the first Southeast quarterback to earn First-Team All-OVC honors after completing 109-of-182 passes (59.9 percent) for 1,246 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He also ranked second on the team in rushing with 887 yards and seven TDs on 169 carries.

Fifth-year senior free safety Bryan Blanfort returns after missing all of last season with a knee injury. Blanfort started every game and ranked second on the team with 79 tackles in 2009.

Linebackers Blake Peiffer, Darrick Borum and Philip Klaproth, free safety Tylor Brock, defensive end Justin Love and wide receiver Chantae Ahamefule are also back to lead Southeast this spring.

The Redhawks return five of their top-10 tacklers from last season in Peiffer (5th, 59), Brock (6th, 56), Borum (7th, 48), Love (9th, 42) and Klaproth (10th, 38). In addition, Brock was a Second-Team Sports Network All-American and tied a Southeast single-season record with six interceptions in 2010.

Ahamefule caught 26 passes for 357 yards and a touchdown as Southeast's top receiver a year ago.

Southeast made some adjustments to its coaching staff prior to this spring. Tim McGuire, who spent the last five years as the Redhawks defensive coordinator, is now assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.

Meanwhile, Brian Mohnsen and Cherokee Valeria are the latest additions to the staff. Mohnsen will serve as Southeast's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, while Valeria will oversee the defensive backs.

Tony Samuel, who was named the 2010 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 3 Coach of the Year and OVC Roy Kidd Coach of the Year, enters his sixth year as the Redhawks head coach.

Southeast will have 15 practices this spring, with its annual spring game slated for Apr. 30. All practices and scrimmages are open to the public and will be held at Houck Stadium.
