CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Southeast Missouri volleyball team defeated Eastern Illinois 3-1 (19-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21) Friday evening in their Ohio Valley Conference opener. The Redhawks improve to 9-6 on the season and 1-0 in the OVC as the Panthers fall to 3-10 and 0-1 in the conference.
“It is very important to take the OVC opener and show we are ready to compete at the top of the conference,” said head coach Julie Folliard.
Southeast has now won five straight OVC openers since 2008 and have won back-to-back openers against EIU.
Senior Brittney Kalinoski had a career night for Southeast with a career-high 18 kills to go along with a career-high 24 digs. She hit .375 on the night making only three errors.
“Brittney swung high and picked apart their blocks,” said Folliard. "Defensively, she worked the end line and ran down every ball she could”
The Panthers took the first set from the Redhawks 25-19. EIU was aggressive in the frame with 18 kills as they hit .325 in the set. The Redhawks were slow in the first frame hitting .075.
“We settled down after the first set, we got in system and got a few hitters going,” said Folliard.
The Redhawks jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in the second frame, but the Panthers responded with a 4-1 run to cut the Southeast lead to 7-6.
Southeast closed out the frame with a 13-6 run as they took the second set 25-16. The Redhawks pounded out 17 kills in the second frame.
Southeast took the third frame 25-21 taking a 2-1-match lead. The Redhawks forced 11 errors by the Panthers as the Redhawks held EIU to a .070 hitting percentage.
The Redhawks took the fourth frame 25-21. Southeast went on a 5-1 run to close out the frame as they took the match 3-1
Southeast hit .333 in the final frame with 13 kills and no errors.
Reining OVC Offensive Player of the Week Taylor Masterson added a career-high 13 kills for Southeast. Junior Colleen Yarber added 13 kills as well.
Setter Julie Shives dished out 44 assists as the Redhawks hit .246 on the night.
Defensively, Emily Coon led the Redhawks with seven blocks. Berkley Idel added 21 digs.
Abby Saalfrank led the Panthers with 16 kills on the evening.
The Redhawks return to action tomorrow afternoon against SIUE at 2:00 p.m. in Edwardsville, Ill.
