Wilford and Lawson are Athletes of the Week
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.
- Corey Wilford and Rebekah Lawson are this week's Montgomery Bank Southeast Missouri Athletes of the Week.
Wilford posted back-to-back 20-point performances for the Southeast men's basketball team last week. A native of Hopkinsville, Ky., Wilford scored 21 points and had 14 in the first half to lead Southeast at SIUE (Jan. 24). Two days later, he scored 20 and finished with 16 in the second half at Eastern Illinois (Jan. 26). Wilford scored 11 of his points in a span of 8:52 to help dig the Redhawks out of a 13-point deficit. His conventional three-point play gave Southeast a one-point lead with 11:08 left in the game. Wilford heated up to shoot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from the field, 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range and averaged 20.2 points per game on the week. It marked the first time he scored 20 or more points in consecutive games during his career.
Lawson, who hails from Fenton, Mo., set a school record in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:36.80 at the Indiana Relays (Jan. 26). The time by Lawson was almost four seconds better than the previous record of 17:40.43 by Julie Koenegstein in 2009. She also leads the Ohio Valley Conference in that event by over 40 seconds.
