Blake Smith turned in Southeast's best finish during the opening day of the NCAA West Region Prelims

Redhawks Close Out Day One at NCAA West Region Prelims
Day One ResultsFAYETTEVILLE, Ark.
– Seven Southeast Missouri athletes opened competition in the NCAA West Region Preliminary Championships Thursday at the University of Arkansas' John McDonnell Field.
Bethany Pfeiffer, Chris Navarro
and Brian Grote
each competed in the javelin. Jessica Brown
, Blake Smith
and Blake Carter
participated in the long jump, and Courtney Gapelu
took part in the shot put.
Smith recorded Southeast's best showing of the day at 25th in the long jump. He finished with a jump of 23-10.25 (7.27m) in his first career NCAA regional appearance.
Carter joined Smith in the long jump, taking 41st
with a 22-9.25 (6.94m) mark.
Pfeiffer and Brown made their first NCAA regional appearance in a Southeast uniform. Pfeiffer finished 33rd
in the women's javelin with a 141-10 (43.25m) mark and Brown placed 44th
in the women's long jump at 17-11 (5.46m).
In her second-straight NCAA West Prelims meet, Gapelu wound up 41st in the shot put. She posted a 46-11.5 (14.31m) mark on her second throw.
Grote and Navarro closed out the day in the javelin. Grote came in at 41st
with a 188-10 (57.56m) and Navarro was 45th
at 185-5 (56.52m).
