Cross Country Nabs Two in Early Signing Period

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri's head cross country coach, Ryan Lane, announced the signings of Griffin Bailey and Carli Knott to the 2016 roster.

Griffin Bailey, a St. Louis, Missouri native, will graduate from Oakville High School in the spring. Bailey competes in both cross country and track & field, in high school. As a sophomore, Bailey was the District Champion in the 1600m and was a state qualifier in the 3200m in track. During his junior campaign, Bailey earned All-State and All-Conference honors in the 800m for track, as well as a third-place finish at state in the 800m. He also earned All-Conference honors in cross country. So far, as a senior, he has picked up All-State and All-Conference honors in cross country. Griffin is the son of Scott and Kathleen Bailey and plans to major in Exercise Science.

"Griffin is a huge signing for our program," Lane said. "His versatility means he can be a major asset for our teams. I cannot stress enough his competitive spirit and attitude towards the sport; It is going to make him continue to grow, exponentially."

Bailey is also accomplished in the Triathlon. In 2014, he won the National Championship at the USA Triathlon in his age group. That same year, Bailey finished third at the World Championship in the ITU Triathlon.

"Since he has trained and competed as a national caliber triathlete, he is obviously not afraid of hard work or dedicating the time necessary to be successful," added Lane. "However, since he has never trained solely as a runner, he has an enormous amount of untapped potential on the track. His personality is going to be a great fit for our team, and he will be an immediate impact for the program. I am excited to work with him and help him reach his lofty goals as an athlete."

Carli Knott, a Jackson, Missouri native, will graduate from Jackson High School in May of 2016. Like Bailey, Knott is a multi-sport athlete, competing in both cross country and track & field. During her high school career, Knott has earned two All-State honors in the 400m, an eighth-place finish at the 2015 Class 4 Cross Country State Championships, a personal record of 18:38 in a 5k race and was a state qualifier in the 4x800m relay. Carli is the daughter of Deanna Knott and plans to major in Exercise Science.

Lane on Knott, "Carli is another in a long line of local talent. Our program has built a tremendous amount of our success on Southeast Missouri area athletes, and I always look to continue to recruit athletes from our area. That being said, I believe Carli has just started to scratch the surface of her potential and has the peripherals to be one of the best track athletes we have ever seen come from the local schools. Since she started as a sprinter, later converting to a middle-distance runner, Carli has a multitude of continued growth we will see in the very near future. Her successes, thus far, are going to pale in comparison to her future accomplishments. We are thrilled to have her as part of our program, and I cannot wait to have her join our returning women as we look to try and win an OVC Championship next fall. She will be an immediate impact for us."
