GULF SHORES, Ala.
- Southeast Missouri (1-2) registered 14 hits in a 10-7 victory over Houston Baptist (2-1) late Saturday at the Sand Dollar Classic.
Southeast scored in each of the first five innings of the game en route to claiming its first win of the season.
The Redhawks built an early 5-0 lead after pushing across three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the second.
After HBU scored four runs to pull to within one in the top of third, Southeast led, 10-4, after six innings.
The Huskies made things interesting in the seventh, rallying for three runs, but Mackenzie Hoelting
recorded the final two outs to secure the win.
Freshman Haley Thogmartin
(1-0) was credited with her first career win. Thogmartin struck out seven and allowed six hits in 6.1 innings.
Emily Mueller (0-1) suffered the loss, scattering 11 hits and giving up seven runs in just three frames.
Offensively, the top four hitters in Southeast's lineup combined for eight hits, seven runs and four RBIs. Danielle Turner
went 2-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and her first career home run. Claire Wernig
went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Savannah Carpenter
finished at 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. And, Haylee Krack
was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Four of Southeast's runs were unearned after HBU committed four errors.
The Redhawks conclude play at the Sand Dollar Classic against Central Arkansas (9 a.m.) and South Alabama (Noon) Sunday.
