EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.Skyler Hogan scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures as Southeast Missouri (5-9, 0-1) dropped a 94-88 decision to SIU Edwardsville (5-8, 1-0) Thursday night in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.

SEMO heated up to shoot 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the field and outscored SIUE, 58-49, in the second half, but it wasn't enough to catch the Cougars.

The Redhawks, without their top scorer, Ledarrius Brewer, who did not play due to a hip injury, fell victim to an 11-0 run midway through the first half. As a result, SIUE built a 26-14 lead in a quick 1:44.

SIUE later carried a 45-30 lead into the intermission.

Isaiah Gable drained a 3-pointer to pull SEMO within nine (62-53) at the 14:04 mark in the second half.

The Redhawks continued to chip away at the Cougars lead and closed the gap to 62-57 on Donnie Lewis' first basket of the season at the 11:49 mark.

A 3-pointer by Hogan later made it a 66-62 game 1:04 after that.

SEMO kept battling and was within six or less points 12 times in the final 10 minutes of the game, but couldn't get any closer than four as SIUE hung on.

The Redhawks shot 30-of-58 from the field and went over 50 percent (51.7) from the field for the second time this year. SEMO buried 13 three-pointers and made 15-of-18 free throws, as well.

Nygal Russell, who started instead of Brewer, added 11 points, while Mark Laros pitched in a career-high 14 and Jonathan Dalton had 10.

Cameron Williams and David McFarland topped SIUE with 27 and 22 points, respectively.

The Cougars shot 58.3 percent (35-of-60) from the floor and knocked down a season-high 10 three-pointers.
